Numeration - Fact Monster
Numeration requires a place value system with groupings based on a base number. Today, most people use a decimal system in base ten. A three digit number represents hundreds, tens, and ones. In binary, a base two system used by computers, the number 111 would equal seven in the decimal system. The duodecimal system is base 12 and uses X and E in addition to the ten numbers. The hexadecimal system, used for computer bytes, is base 16 and uses A through F along with the decimal numbers.
