About the Category!

The Berkeley Carroll Mock Newbery Club is a book group for grades 4-8, formed and facilitated by BCS Librarians in 2009. This year will mark the club’s tenth consecutive year as a cross-divisional, cross-grade reading group for students who enjoy taking on the challenge of reading independently. 

The Newbery Medal is a prestigious award given annually to the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The BCS Mock Newbery Club provides an opportunity for students to read and discuss the newest children’s books with other passionate readers. Members are required to examine and evaluate their reading in terms of the criteria for the award and to follow general discussion guidelines. 

 

 

 

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. More information on the award can found here

This year, members of the Mock Newbery Elective had almost 40 books to choose from as they voted for the Mock Newbery winner of Berkeley Carroll. The seven finalists (all displayed on this page) were "Efrén Divided," "King And The Dragonflies," "The List of Things That Will Not Change," "The One and Only Bob," "When Stars are Scattered," "When You Trap A Tiger," and "A Wish In The Dark," which was selected to be the winner.

In addition to book discussions, some members also shared reviews on the Mock Newbery Club's Google padlet.
